Auckland's Passenger Ferry 'Wandere' return to service after undergoing much needed Refit

news-details

Auckland’s passenger ferry Wanderer has just arrived back from Whangarei where she underwent a much needed refit, making her the first AT branded vessel on the Waitematā Harbour.

This is the first of four vessels purchased from Fullers360 last year to undergo a refit as part of the transition to public ownership of Tāmaki Makaurau’s commuter ferry fleet. These four ferries are at a point where they need some work done to them to ensure they are able to be operated efficiently and reliably for the rest of their service lives, providing continuity of service while our new electric and electric-hybrid vessels are getting built.

Two new low-exhaust emission diesel engines with lower C02 emission profile have been installed to replace the previous two stroke diesel engines which are outdated and more expensive to maintain. The new International Maritime Organisation (IMO) compliant Tier 2 diesel engines are more efficient and cleaner burning, with a noticeable and measurable reduction around harmful NOX, SOX and particulate matter. Along with new engines, Wanderer also has new gearboxes and control systems, new and re-upholstered seats installed, repainted deck, hull and other customer facing areas.

Replacing the fleet of ageing ferries along with the replacement of older noisy diesel engines will help us move towards our city’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. Our first two fully-electric vessel being built here in Tāmaki Makaurau by EV Maritime and McMullen & Wing are set to be on the water in 2024, with our electric-hybrid vessel being built in Wanganui by Q-West Boat Builders on the water by 2025.
